Chapter Five

Johnny and I spent three hours at the mall. I deposited the check he had written me into my account, then proceeded to spend most of it. I have never in my life had such fun shopping. It was exciting to just go into a store, pick something out and buy it, without even having to ask how much it cost. I felt like Julie Roberts in Pretty Woman. Okay, she was on Rodeo Drive and I was at the local Orlando mall, but who cares, that's what I felt like.

We arrived back home, and Jeff was again struggled to bring my bags into the house. I retreated to my room, hoping to try out my new bikini in the pool. I finally found it amongst the vast amount of clothes sitting on my bed. I changed quickly and grabbed a towel. I practically ran toward the pool. As soon as I arrived I noticed that ripples were forming on the pools surface. A closer look revealed someone doing laps underwater. With a splash I came face to face with Justin. I waved hello. He ignored me and returned to the deep depths. I shook my head, frustrated that he was such a jerk. I started to jump in the pool, hoping to avoid his Royal Highness when I noticed my reflection in the water. The baby blue bikini wrapped around my body like a second skin. I let out a long sigh. I had done it again. No wonder he thinks I'm a fan, both times that he has seen me I'm wearing his favorite color, and he thinks I'm doing it on purpose. My trip to the mall proved to me that his fans did in fact take this fact very seriously. As I walked around the mall, I noticed a swarm of baby blue outside of Abercrombie and Fitch. I asked one of the girls gathered there what they were waiting for. Her answer shocked me. She told me that Justin Timberlake frequented the store and they knew he was in town so they were waiting for him. I laughed at her, but as I stood staring at my reflection in the water I started to understand his thinking. I wanted to change, but I rationalized that the mature thing to do was to face him and talk about it. We had already gotten off on the wrong foot and I didn't want anymore misunderstandings to occur between us. We had to work together, very close together and these misunderstandings could make both of our positions uncomfortable.

He emerged from the water before I had even entered. He looked at me as he rubbed the water off of his body with his towel. "You can go in now, I'm finished."

It was the first time that he had actually talked to me. I was surprised to find the slight southern accent drip through his words. "I wasn't waiting for you to finish to get in the pool. I was waiting so that I could talk to you."

At once I saw his defenses go up. His body became tense, veins showed in his neck, as anger ripped through his blue eyes. "What do you want to talk about?" His tone was condescending.

My confidence did not falter. "I wanted to tell you that Johnny told me what you think of me. I just wanted to set the record straight. Justin, I was hired to do a job. I am not your fan. I know you think that by my clothing choice but believe me, when I decided on what to wear, I didn't even think about you. I didn't even know that baby blue was your favorite color until Johnny told me this afternoon. I don't want you to think that about me. I am here to perform a service, nothing more. I don't want anything from you or any of your friends other then my paycheck. I have been sworn to complete secrecy and I always keep my promises. You don't have anything to worry about. I know that you might not believe that. But I understand the position that you are in; I would never jeopardize that because, quite frankly, to do so would jeopardize my job. And I can't let that happen, I enjoy my job far to much."

I finished my monologue, not really concerned about his reaction to it. He stood, staring at me in shock. He then shook his head. He lowered his eyes to meet my gaze once again. He drew in a deep breath and let it out. Then he smiled. "I'm sorry. I have been acting like a total asshole toward you. I believe you and I'm sorry. I shouldn't have treated our new employee in this way."

He amazed me; he had apologized and angered me all in one breath. I didn't let it bother me though because he was telling the truth. I was his employee. I determined at that moment that it would be a good thing for me to remember that. "Can we start over?" He questioned.

"Sure," I replied, still annoyed with him but desiring to just let it go. He left the pool area, and I took the opportunity to take a dip.

After a long relaxing swim, I returned to my room and prepared for the evening ahead. I was going out with three, possibly four of the most sought after men in the world. What was a girl to wear? I decided on a short black dress that hugged every curve. I showered and finished getting ready. I pulled my hair up and applied dramatic evening makeup. I left the room and made my descent down the stairs, at the bottom stood my three dates, all dressed in various styles of clothing. Joey approached me and took my hand. I looped my arm with his. His flirtatious manner made me smile. We walked out the front door and into the awaiting limo.

The night was full of good times, drinking and dancing. I learned many things about my three dates. Chris was absolutely certifiably crazy. Joey was indeed the lady's man, and Justin couldn't go anywhere without having forty girls clamor around him. Unfortunately the time sped by way to quickly with the guys determining that they needed to get home and get some rest before rehearsals in the morning. Joey was the most depressed by this. It seemed to me that he wanted to stay out and party all night. This didn't surprise me, but what did was Justin's maturity. I learned that he was the youngest in the group, actually too young to be in the club that we had gone to, but his fame and status did come with some perks, like the bouncer looking the other way when he made his was through the door. Despite his age, he kept the other two in line, and decided when it was time to go. All Justin had to mention was JC's rage if they were to be late. As JC's name fell off of Justin's lips, I realized for the first time that night that he hadn't come with us. I also noticed that I hadn't even thought about him. This thought comforted me as I thought about the days ahead.

We left the club and made our way back to Johnny's house. The ride in the limo was quiet. Some of my dates had fallen asleep. I was surprised to learn that they would all return home alone. Finally arriving at Johnny's, we made our way inside. After exchanging goodnights, I made my way to my room. I climbed into bed exhausted. Not five minutes later slumber consumed me.
