Chapter Twenty OneI awoke with a start Monday morning as someone was calling my name. I turned on the bed and glanced at the clock, the numbers reading 7 AM. I groaned to myself as I pulled myself out of bed. Grabbing my robe, I covered my body with it before opening the door. I knew who stood on the other side by the voice alone and although part of me longed not to see him, the majority of me could think of no better person to wake me.
I pulled open the door and saw him. His shoulders slumped and his crystal blue eyes were cast down to the floor. He wore loose fitting khakis and a green pullover shirt. Brown boots covered his feet. His hair was wet with gel and his face was freshly shaved. The dark circles that I had grown accustom to seeing still lingered around his eyes. The wrinkles of worry and despair remained cast on his forehead.
"Good morning, JC." I greeted him, anxious to find out what he wanted and more anxious for him to go away. I did want to see him, however, the pressing issue of getting back to my reading was ever present in my mind. I didn’t want to send him away but I wanted to finish discovering what had hurt him, so that I would know how to help him.
He didn’t look up as he muttered, "Hi, Blake." A long silence followed and I stared at him. His hands fidgeted and his eyes darted from one side of the hall to the other. He avoided looking at me.
"Do you need something?" I questioned hoping to find out what had brought him to my door.
"No," he began, taking a deep breath. "Johnny sent me up here to tell you that he wants to meet with you."
The words sliced through the air between us and anxiety started to run through every nerve ending in my body. I wondered what had prompted Johnny to send for me. I whispered a quick, "Okay, I’ll be right down" and then turned from him. His hand caught my shoulder and he turned me again to face him.
"Blake, that’s not all I wanted." He stated before pushing me into the room.
